Why Germany, why now

Germany has overtaken the US and UK
as the top choice for Indian students

In short: Germany combines free tuition at world-ranked public universities with strong industry connections and an 18-month post-study work visa — a combination no other country in Europe matches at the same price point.

In the Winter Semester 2024/25, 59,419 Indian students were enrolled in Germany — a 20% jump year-on-year that made India the largest country of origin for international students, overtaking China. The reason is clear: free tuition at public universities, global employer recognition, and a structured 18-month post-study work pathway that few countries match.

However, the Germany application process is longer and more sequential than Australia, UK, or Canada. It starts with the mandatory APS certificate, moves through Uni-Assist or direct applications, and ends with a blocked account and a national visa. Understanding the sequence early is the single biggest advantage you can give yourself.

01

Free tuition at public universities

In 14 of Germany's 16 states, public universities charge zero tuition fees to international students. You pay only a semester fee of €70–€350, which in many cities includes a public transport pass.

02

World-ranked institutions

According to the QS World University Rankings 2027, 10 German universities rank in the global top 200. TUM at #22 is the only German university in the global top 50 — for the ninth year running.

03

2,400+ English-taught programmes

You do not need German to begin. Over 2,400 international programs are taught entirely in English, mostly at Master's level, making Germany far more accessible than most students assume.

04

Industry ties unmatched in Europe

BMW, Siemens, Bosch, SAP, Volkswagen, and Airbus recruit directly from German campuses. Germany's Dual Education system builds industry placement into the degree structure itself.

05

18-month post-study work visa

After graduation, Indian students can apply for an 18-month job-seeker visa, then an EU Blue Card, which offers a pathway to longer-term German residency.

06

Schengen access — 29 countries, one visa

A German student visa lets you travel across 29 Schengen countries without a separate permit — valuable for internships, research travel, and exploring Europe.

The Complete Sequence

Your Germany application — from APS to arrival

Key point: Germany's application is sequential — you cannot skip steps or do them out of order. APS must be done first. Admission comes second. Blocked account and visa only happen after you have an offer. Plan 10–14 months ahead for a Winter Semester (October) start.

For Winter Semester 2027: start your APS application by October–November 2026 at the latest. The Uni-Assist deadline for most universities is 15 July 2027, which means your APS must be in hand by May 2027. DAAD scholarship deadlines for October 2027 also fall around October–November 2026 — the same window as your APS start.

The mandatory first step

APS Certificate — what it is,
what changed in 2026, and how to get it

In short: The APS certificate verifies your Indian academic documents before any German university or embassy will process your application. Without it, nothing else moves forward. It costs ₹18,000, requires an in-person interview at the German Embassy in Delhi, and is valid forever once issued.

The Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) certificate has been mandatory for Indian students since 1 November 2022. Since April 2023, APS issues only a digital certificate called the DigZert — a digitally signed PDF sent to your registered email. There is no physical paper certificate.

⚠ New rule from March 2026 — affects undergraduate applicants

From Winter Semester 2026/27 onwards, a minimum of 70% overall marks in Class XII is now required for all undergraduate pathways, regardless of board (CBSE, ICSE, or any state board). Two pathways are available: Class XII (70%+) + APS = eligibility for Studienkolleg; Class XII (70%+) + APS + one completed Bachelor's year = direct subject-restricted admission. Most competitor guides have not yet updated for this change.

Step-by-step: how to apply for your APS certificate

01
Documents — prepare first
Gather institution-certified copies

You need certified originals — not self-attested copies — of Class 10, Class 12, and all semesters of your Bachelor's transcripts. Gap year affidavits and employment letters must be notarised. Self-attested copies are now a strict rejection criterion under 2026 guidelines.

02
Payment — non-refundable
Pay ₹18,000 to APS India

Pay via CCAvenue, UPI, or NEFT bank transfer. Keep the transaction receipt and use your APS application number as the payment reference in all bank correspondence.

03
Interview — Delhi only, in person
Book your slot early — peak slots fill within hours

The APS office is inside the German Embassy campus in New Delhi. The interview takes 20–40 minutes with subject-specific questions. Engineering applicants should revise fundamentals, not project work. The interview language matches your target program language.

04
Result — 3–6 weeks
Receive your DigZert by email

Processing takes 3–4 weeks off-peak and up to 6 weeks during January–April peak season. The certificate is valid indefinitely — you apply only once, unless your qualification level changes significantly.

DAAD Advantage on Blocked Account

A DAAD scholarship waives the blocked account requirement entirely. Since DAAD pays your stipend directly, the embassy does not require separate proof of funds. This is one of the strongest practical reasons to apply for DAAD even if the competition feels intense.

Funding your degree

Scholarships for Indian students in Germany —
where to actually apply

In short: Because tuition is already free, Germany scholarships primarily cover living costs. A DAAD award also removes the blocked account requirement — which is a major practical benefit worth applying for even if you feel underqualified.

DAAD scholarship deadlines for October 2027 intake fall around October–November 2026, which means you should be shortlisting scholarships at the same time as starting your APS process. Indian students who begin in January 2027 have already missed the DAAD window for that intake.

DAAD Scholarship

€850–€1,200/month + benefits

Germany's flagship scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service. Covers living costs, health insurance, and travel allowance — and waives the blocked account requirement entirely. Over 86 programs available for Indian applicants. Apply 12–14 months before your intake. Deadlines for October 2027 fall around October–November 2026.

Deutschlandstipendium

€300/month

A merit-based scholarship applied for through the individual university after you receive an admission offer. Funded 50% by the university and 50% by private sponsors. Available at TUM, LMU, Heidelberg, and most major research universities.

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung

Up to €1,200/month

Targets students with civic leadership, political engagement, and a record of community involvement. Covers living costs, language courses, and provides a strong alumni network across Germany and Europe.

Heinrich Böll Foundation

Up to €1,200/month

Aligned with sustainability, environmental science, and social justice fields. A particularly strong fit for students targeting Freiburg's sustainability programs or KIT's environmental engineering tracks.

The Visa Process

Germany student visa for Indian students —
the 2026–27 process

In short: The German student visa is a National D Visa applied for through the new Consular Services Portal (CSP), not the old VIDEX system. It takes 6–8 weeks to process. The full journey from APS to visa grant spans 4–6 months — start early.
01
First — mandatory
Complete your APS certificate

No German university will process your application and no embassy will accept your visa without it. Allow 3–6 weeks minimum, plus travel time to Delhi for the interview.

02
After APS — before visa
Open your Sperrkonto (blocked account)

Deposit €11,904 with an approved provider such as Expatrio or Fintiba. Open the account 8–12 weeks before your visa appointment so it is fully active and documented when you apply.

03
Online — CSP portal
Complete the Consular Services Portal application

Student visa applications now use the CSP, not the older VIDEX form. Complete the CSP form first — you receive your biometrics appointment link through the portal after submitting.

04
In person — VFS appointment
Submit biometrics and original documents

Bring your admission letter, APS DigZert, blocked account confirmation, health insurance, and passport. Biometrics are collected at VFS Global, not at the embassy directly.

05
Processing — 6–8 weeks
Wait for the visa decision

Applications are forwarded to Germany's Aliens' Authority. Standard processing is 6–8 weeks. Submit well before your course start date — not a few weeks before it.

How Uniplus helps

The students who succeed in Germany
start early and get the APS right the first time

A rejected APS application means a 3-month wait and another ₹18,000. A missed DAAD deadline means waiting a full year. A weak Motivationsschreiben means rejection from universities that would have accepted a better-prepared version of the same profile. We help you avoid all three.

01
APS Interview Prep

Document review and subject-specific preparation before your Delhi trip — reducing the risk of a rejection that costs 3 months and ₹18,000 to undo.

02
University Shortlisting

Matched to your CGPA, field, and city preference — including realistic admission chances, not optimistic guesses.

03
Motivationsschreiben

German universities expect a specific, academic, factual motivation letter — not a personal statement. We write and review these to match each university's expectations.

04
Scholarship Applications

DAAD deadline management and application review across multiple foundations — starting 12–14 months ahead of your intake target.

05
Blocked Account and Visa

Step-by-step guidance through Sperrkonto opening, the CSP visa application, and document preparation for the German Embassy appointment.

06
Pre-Departure Orientation

Anmeldung process, health insurance selection (TK vs AOK vs Mawista), and a first-week checklist so your arrival in Germany goes smoothly.

Frequently asked questions

18 questions Indian students ask about
studying in Germany

Admissions and language

Can Indian students study in Germany for free? +
Yes. Public universities in 14 of Germany's 16 states charge zero tuition fees to all international students, including Indian students. You pay only a semester administration fee of €70–€350. Private universities are a different story — they charge €10,000–€30,000 per year, so it matters significantly where you apply.
Is IELTS mandatory to study in Germany? +
For English-taught programs, yes — most universities require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent PTE/TOEFL scores. For German-taught programs, you need a German language certificate such as TestDaF (level 4) or DSH instead. Some universities offer dual-track programs with separate language requirements for each track.
Can I study in Germany without knowing German? +
Yes, at the Master's level. Over 2,400 programs are taught entirely in English. However, learning at least conversational German (B1 level) significantly improves your chances of part-time employment, local integration, and long-term career prospects — most German employers value B2-level proficiency even in technical roles.
What CGPA do I need for German universities? +
Most competitive public universities expect a minimum CGPA of 7.5 out of 10, converted using the Bavarian formula. Top programs at TUM, RWTH Aachen, and LMU often require 8.0 or above. Admission is competitive — a strong Statement of Purpose and relevant work or research experience can support a borderline CGPA.

APS Certificate

What is the APS Certificate and why do I need it? +
The APS Certificate (Akademische Prüfstelle) is a document issued by the German Embassy in New Delhi that verifies your Indian academic credentials are genuine. Since November 2022, it is mandatory for all Indian students applying to German universities or for a student visa. Without it, neither process can proceed. It costs ₹18,000 and requires an in-person interview in Delhi.
How long does APS processing take? +
Standard processing takes 3–4 weeks from when APS receives your complete documents. During the January–April peak season, timelines can extend to 6 weeks. Always apply well before your Uni-Assist deadline — for most universities this is July 15.
Is the APS Certificate mandatory for every Indian student? +
Yes, for virtually all Indian students applying for a degree program or student visa in Germany. Limited exemptions exist for PhD applicants whose supervisor waives the requirement, students funded by DAAD or EU scholarships, and applicants with international qualifications such as an IB diploma. Verify your specific case at aps-india.de.
Does the APS Certificate expire? +
No. The APS certificate is valid indefinitely. Since April 2023, it is issued digitally as a DigZert (digitally signed PDF). You apply only once. However, if your qualification level changes significantly — for example, completing a PhD after previously applying with a Bachelor's — you may need a new evaluation.

Universities and courses

Which is the best university in Germany for Indian students? +
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is Germany's highest-ranked university at #22 globally in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and is the top choice for engineering, computer science, AI, and business. For medicine and humanities, LMU Munich and Heidelberg University are the strongest options. For engineering specifically, RWTH Aachen at #99 is the other major name.
Which courses are most popular in Germany for Indian students? +
The most commonly chosen courses among Indian students are Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Automotive Engineering, Business Administration, and Applied Mathematics. Germany's strength in automotive and engineering aligns well with the industries that employ the largest number of Indian engineering graduates.

Costs, blocked account, and working

What is the total cost of studying in Germany? +
While public university tuition is free, you should budget €850–€1,200 per month for living costs depending on the city — Munich is the most expensive; Aachen and Freiburg are significantly cheaper. One-time costs before arrival include the APS fee (₹18,000), visa fee (€75), blocked account deposit (€11,904), and health insurance setup (~€110/month). Total first-year cost including living typically ranges from €15,000–€25,000 depending on city and lifestyle.
What is a blocked account and how much do I need? +
A Sperrkonto is a restricted bank account that proves to the German Embassy you can fund your living costs without working illegally. For 2026–27, you must deposit €11,904 in total. Once in Germany, €992 is released to you each month. Approved providers include Expatrio, Fintiba, and Deutsche Bank. Open it at least 8–12 weeks before your visa appointment. Importantly, the money is entirely yours — it is refunded if you decide not to go.
Can I work part-time while studying in Germany? +
Yes. International students can work up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year. Research and teaching assistant positions at your university often fall outside this limit, so many students can work more hours in practice. Part-time work is a realistic way to offset living costs, particularly in cities outside Munich.

Visa, post-study, and family

How long does the Germany student visa take to process? +
The visa typically takes 6–8 weeks to process after your VFS biometrics appointment. However, the complete journey from starting your APS application to holding a visa grant spans 4–6 months. For Winter Semester 2027, this means starting the APS by October–November 2026.
Can I stay in Germany after graduation? +
Yes. After completing your degree, you can apply for an 18-month job-seeker visa (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitsuche) to find employment. Once you secure a qualifying job, you apply for an EU Blue Card, which is a pathway to permanent residency. Indian professionals in engineering, IT, and healthcare are particularly in demand.
Can my spouse or family join me in Germany? +
Yes. Spouses and dependent children can apply for family reunification visas. Your spouse may be permitted to work full-time in Germany depending on their own visa conditions. You will need to demonstrate sufficient income or funds to support dependants, which may increase the funds required beyond the standard €11,904 blocked account.

Scholarships

How do I apply for a DAAD scholarship? +
DAAD has over 86 programs, some specifically available for Indian students. For October 2027, deadlines fall around October–November 2026. You need a strong academic profile (7.5+ CGPA typically), a clear research or study motivation letter, relevant academic references, and good language skills. A DAAD award also waives the blocked account requirement entirely — which is a significant financial benefit even beyond the stipend.
Are there scholarships available specifically for Indian students in Germany? +
Yes. DAAD has specific programs for applicants from India, and the Deutschlandstipendium is available at individual universities. The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and Heinrich Böll Foundation both accept Indian applicants. Since tuition is already free, scholarships in Germany primarily cover living costs — which at €850–€1,200/month across a two-year Master's adds up to a meaningful amount.
